What Separates Me From You by A Day To Remember

Introduction: Are you just a person looking for a band to kick back and chill too? Go skateboarding too? This band has some great hard rock / punk songs on it. Are you a person looking to go moshing, get your adrenaline pumping and to headbang to? This album has some great metalcore songs. In short, this band appeals to a wide audience. It was because of this that a lot of previous fans were narrow minded and said the album was bad because they wanted a "full heavy" album like their previous album (which was extremely overproduced). Screams don't make a good album, the willingness to experiment without selling out is the mark of a good band, along with the musicianship of course. I have to say, there are quite a few tracks that i'll be playing in my car on the way home from school. I'm glad A Day To Remember put out an album that I can finally fully enjoy. Let's jump into a track by track review.


Track 1: Sticks & Bricks:
One of the heavier songs on the album, a great opener, with a blood curdling scream at the beginning. Great guitar and an overall heavy feeling. I feel though that the instrumentals relied a little too much on the standard chugga chugga method. However I feel that the clean vocals afterwords made up for that.

Track Rating: 7.7/10 (Good)

Track 2: All I Want:
One of the rare crosses between Metalcore and Punk on the album. Jeremy's voice is top notch as usual. However the instrumentals are rather average and uninteresting. I would listen to this just for the vocal melodies however.

Track 3: It's Complicated:
One of the Punk songs on the album. Yet again, more amazing vocal melodies, the guitar is rather inventive in this song. They don't use the chugga chugga method as in track 1. They have a well placed breakdown near the end of the song, but it's surprising that the breakdown only lasts around 6 or 7 seconds and then goes back into slow vocals but then goes into another great melody. One of the pretty good songs on this album.

Track Rating: 8.2/10 (Very Good)

Track 4: This Is The House That Doubt Built:
Starts out with an acoustic guitar intro followed by some drum cymbal tapping. Then dissolves into another melodic punk song. Nothing really noteworthy to point out that hasn't been pointed out in the songs above. It's just a good song.

Track Rating: 7.1/10 (Good)

Track 5: 2nd Sucks:
Damn good intro, one of the metalcore songs on the album. The guitars are catchy, and the screams are grand. However I feel that the breakdowns in this song are lacking slightly, the non breakdown parts are much more synchronized and are much better. This seems like a song that the old "The Devil Wears Prada" would do. However, they matured and their new albums is great, this song falls to a lot of bad plagues. Which ultimately keep it from being a good example of metalcore.

Track 6: Better Off This Way:
Some of the best vocals on the album, addicting hooks, and has made me regain hope in the Punk genre. There is some screaming on this, but not enough to make it metalcore, same with the guitar style, more punk than metalcore. One of the best songs on the album, highly recommended. There's nothing really else to say, it's a damn good melodic punk song.

Track 7: All Signs Point To Lauderdale:
Ahh... already racking up an unreal amount of plays on my Ipod. Easily my favorite song on the album. "I hate this town, it's so washed up and all my friends don't give a fuck". This is just the perfect song to play in your car. Easily the most addicting vocals and guitar on the album. This is just a fun song. Nothing particularly musically inventive. But It's just the way they made it, the way they put their effort into this track. It's that reason that makes it so great. I could think of absolutely no way to improve this song, the melodic feel is absolutely brilliant, critics cited this song as simplistic yet brilliant, and for once, I agree with them, it's the simplicity and the heart put into this song that makes it so great. Congratulations A Day To Remember, you have made one of my favorite songs, well done.

Track 8: You Be Tails, I'll Be Sonic:
I don't get why this song was praised in particular, it's pretty bland with the exception of some nice guitar, even Jeremy's screams didn't save this song. Which was truly surprising. However I enjoyed the cleans. Again, nothing musically unique to mention.

Track 9: Out Of Time:
Another good melodic song, i'm citing Jeremy's vocals as the main reason for my rating of this. His vocals blend well with the guitar. Nothing really else to mention about this song.

Track 10: If I Leave:
Scream intro, then it goes into punk. I truly do not like this song, Jeremy's vocals sound absolutely nasal, and the guitars and drums both sound held back. Not a good album closer.
